Emergency Procedures
(From January 1999 Watts & Volts Newsletter)
Intermountain
Rural Electric Association has improved its emergency response procedures and offers the
following guidelines to prepare for and cope with an electrical outage:
Pre-Planning:
- Check your phone number printed on your monthly electric bill to
confirm that it is current.
- Keep IREA's phone number close to your telephone.
- Keep batteries, flashlights and a battery-powered radio handy.
- Maintain an emergency supply of drinking water and canned or dry
food (don't forget the manual can opener!).
During An Outage:
- After you've checked your circuit breakers, call the office which
services your home or IREA headquarters at our toll-free number: 1-800-332-9540
- Listen to the radio for information about the location and
expected duration of the outage (KOA; KTLK; KCFR; KHOW; KYGO).
- Never attempt to trim or remove trees from downed power lines, and
stay away from them even if you think they are not energized!
- Keep your refrigerator/freezer doors closed and keep them covered
with a blanket during an extended outage.
- Unplug electronic equipment and turn off light switches to help
prevent overloads once power is restored.
In Case Of Power
Outage:
1. See if your home's circuit breakers have tripped, or fuses
have blown. If some lights in your home are working, this is likely to be the problem.
2. If all your power is out, check the main breaker located near
your meter, The meter may be mounted on your house or on a pedestal which may be some
distance from your house. Check with your neighbors to determine whether the trouble is
general in your area.
3. Call your local IREA office to report the outage.
- During regular business hours call (303) 688-3100
(Sedalia office).
- To report outages after hours, call 303 688-3100
within the metro area or (800) 332-9540 outside of the metro area.
- In the event of an extended outage, use a
battery-operated radio to listen to any of the following radio stations: KHOW-630 AM,
KTLK-760 AM, KOA-850 AM, KYGO-1600 AM, or KCFR-90.1 FM.
