Why is the Soil Treatment of Trees so Important?

Soil treatments address three very important ongoing needs of trees.

1.     Soil treatments provide nutrients and minerals that trees need to grow.  Trees need a proper balance of many elements in order to be health and function properly; some of these elements are deficient in our soils. Soil treatments provide the required balance.

2.     Soil treatments provide nutrition for micro-organisms to grow and improve the soil. Our Front Range soils are of poor quality, they lack organic matter, they lack important micro-organisms and they lack the nutrition to support the micro-organisms. Soil treatments include organic elements and nutrition for micro-organisms to work with and develop a better soil which results in healthier growing trees.

3.     Soil treatments replicate the natural recycling that is found in an undisturbed forest setting. In a natural forest, leaves (which contain a wide variety of important elements) fall to the ground, decompose and place organic matter, nutrients and minerals back into the soil. In our yards, trees pull minerals and nutrients out of the soil, but these minerals and nutrients are not being recycled and replaced in the soil because we clean up the leaves and debris that falls from the tree. Soil treatments are the only way to reintroduce the natural recycling of nutrients and elements in our yards so our trees have what they need and remain healthy.

Protective Treatment of Trees

Some trees can be targets of very destructive insects. It is not worth taking a chance of insect attack so it is important to do a protective treatment and keep the tree as healthy as possible.

Trees have chemical defense systems that are helpful in protecting the tree from insect attack. When a tree is healthy this defense system is strong. When a tree is not healthy the defense system is set aside to focus energy on tree survival, this leaves the tree vulnerable to insect and disease attack. Soil treatments are very important to keeping trees healthy and chemical defense systems strong.

In addition to the importance of keeping your trees healthy it is also important to do a protective treatment for some trees. The following trees should receive a yearly protective treatment to help protect them from insect attack.

Most varieties of Pine trees, Ash trees, American Elm trees, Birch trees, mature Spruce trees, Plum, Peach and Cherry trees. There are some other trees that may or may not need protective treatments for specific reasons but this is most of the list.
