Citizen Science is collaborative scientific research, managed by scientists and conducted by amateur or non-professional scientists in the field. Its goal is to further science itself---and the understanding of both science and the scientific process. Fifth graders at NE are part of a distributed community of citizen scientists who collaborate on specific research topics.
Fifth graders at Northeast Elementary will be participating in the Great Backyard Bird Count this month sponsored by the National Audubon Society, February 14-17. This is an annual four-day event that uses data collected by citizen scientists in the field to create a real-time snapshot of bird populations. We will be counting birds (and noting species) for 15 minute increments of time both at the Pinery Bird Sanctuary and over the weekend from home. This data will then be recorded at www.birdcount.org.
Everyone in The Pinery community is welcome to join us in this event! In fact, for the first time, data will be collected from all over the world!
Look for a follow up article in the May issue of the PHA newsletter.
